Characters need to rest after a full day of travel to recuperate. It's encouraged that you roleplay the effects of weariness after combat, a long day, or a difficult encounter no matter what your hit point total is.

When you consider the rules for resting and regaining hit points, remember that hit points are an abstraction of a character's durability. Characters do not sustain serious injuries until they are pushed to 0 hit points. Every other loss of HP wears down the character's endurance, deals durability damage to their armor, and generally causes minor wounds like bruising or fatigue.

Regaining Hit Points

In-combat, you can regain hit points from a magical healing spell or a healing potion.

Out-of-combat, you can regain hit points from resting. You must eat some food/water and sleep for at least 6 hours to rest. A rest allows you to regain 50% of your hit point total.

Exhaustion

Environmental hazards, such as starvation, not taking rests, or the long-­term effects of freezing or scorching temperatures can lead to a special condition called exhaustion. Exhaustion is measured in six levels. If you do not rest for 3 days, you will gain one level of exhaustion. If an already exhausted creature suffers another effect that causes exhaustion, its current level of exhaustion goes up. A creature suffers the effect of its current level of exhaustion as well as all lower levels. For example, a creature suffering level 2 exhaustion has its speed halved and has disadvantage on Ability Checks.

An effect that removes exhaustion reduces its level as specified in the effect’s description, with all exhaustion Effects ending if a creature’s exhaustion level is reduced below 1. Finishing a rest reduces a creature’s exhaustion level by 1.

Ability Usage

As soon as combat ends, your Tier Abilities all "recharge" and you can immediately use them for the next combat encounter. Read more about Tier Abilities on the Character Abilities page.
