History

Before the sacrifice of Esk, the middle sea between Isandor and Hellan was a constant traffic lane of ships. Merchants used the sea to traverse the great islands faster. Nations sent their warships across the sea to flank their enemies. However, when Esk sacrificed himself in Year 0, the Veil descended and sunk every ship traveling across the lanes.

The Veil is a shifting mass of fog that hungrily pulls in any ships that venture nearby. It can be considered the "Bermuda Triangle" of Ilisara; seldom do creatures who enter the Veil ever leave it. Sometimes, strange and fantastical items or creatures wash up on Ilisara's shores, and it is speculated that these come from inside the Veil.

The Veil is mysterious. Very few people in Ilisara know anything about what it's true purpose is.

Some legends say that the Mermaids have a city on the border of the Veil. Most are skeptical of this legend, for the Veil pierces through the water itself. How could they possibly have a city on the edge of such chaos?

The Nemesis Campaign

The Nemesis campaign expanded on the Veil's lore. Ahellion and Veladriel Dawnwalker entered the Veil pursuing an ancient enemy, and discovered that sea beasts (krakens and even a Godzilla-like lizard) swarm the waters within it. They also discovered an island called Esk's Isle -- a place where the remnants of Esk's soul had coagulated. The entire island was covered in a magical forest with dangerous living plants, strange obelisks and temples, and a magical stairway to Esk's own observatory. From the observatory, the world's leylines could be viewed.

The island is inhabited by large, gargantuan beasts (such as a Giganotosaurus) and other primordial life forms assumed to be the gods' first attempts at life before dwarves, elves, and humans walked the planet.

Travelers from other worlds also end up on this island. Some are friendly, some are not.

Gameplay Considerations

The Veil acts as a way for players to bring characters from other worlds to Ilisara. This lets you keep characters from other games or campaigns.
